Wilmington Street, December 9, 2012 in Downtown Raleigh

This weekend, crews tore up this building at the corner of Wilmington and Martin Streets. The building was deteriorating and because of safety, the owner took this route. Sad to lose it but what can you do if no one is willing to step up and save these structures that are now unsafe to be in.

The building row here is part of the future Edison project, a cluster of buildings around the parking deck on the same block. Skyhouse Apartments, a 264 foot tower, is planned to be built on the same block but at the corner of Martin and Blount Streets.

Bolt Bistro and Bar coming soon

Bolt Bistro and Bar will open soon in the space formerly occupied by The Mint on Fayetteville Street. By open soon, I mean “Late Summer” according to the new sign posted in the space windows. According to the restaurant’s website:

The concept of Bolt is to bring a sleek, clean, approachable, affordable, dining experience to Downtown Raleigh.

Bolt has teamed up with International Culinary Superstar Penny Davidi! Penny and our chefs are working on a local infused menu from North Carolina.

The sign also has a little rendering of the outdoor seating space. Could Bolt finally create a lively outdoor seating scene that The Mint could not?

Wake County Justice Center construction in June 2012.

The Wake County Justice Center dominates the intersection of McDowell and Martin Streets. Almost three years ago, there was just a hole at this site.

For more trips down memory lane, over four years ago we’ve discussed the project and what buildings it has replaced.

The ugly parking deck, the Garland Jones building, and the Lawyers Building are all coming down for the expansion of the current site right next door.
