The apartments over at The Alexan are starting to get some clothes on. The brick exterior is starting to be put in place at, what will be, Glenwood South’s newest apartment building. The approximately 180 homes here will keep adding to what is likely the densest residential area in the city.

The old North Carolina Administration building is currently being demolished over on Jones Street. It’s certainly not an implosion kind of thing but a slow “chipping away at it” process as it’s easily been over a week, maybe two, and they are only about halfway through. It’ll certainly open things up a bit on Jones once finished.

Recently, the Downtown Raleigh Alliance (DRA) released the final draft of the Downtown Raleigh Economic Development Strategy, the ongoing study that hopes to revitalize urban Raleigh post-pandemic. We talked about part 1 earlier this year, with a heavy focus on Fayetteville Street, and now we have the complete report which lays out new ideas and a bold vision for downtown. Here are the many ways to dive right into it:
- Watch the YouTube video, embedded above, for a brief introduction.

New Bern Avenue TOD Is Now In Place
Rezoning case Z-92-22, or better The New Bern Avenue Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) case, is now in the books. Or “on the map” as I prefer to see these things. As a reminder, Rockway is the name of the area (district?) and there are multiple buildings including The Row, The Heath, and Lynde Hill Lofts. It probably requires an on-site visit to understand so if you want more, check em out here.

For the crane fans out there, a new one has sprouted over at the future Civic Tower as part of the city’s Municipal Campus across from Nash Square. The upcoming 300+ foot tower will definitely add some urban presence to Hargett Street and the square as the city consolidates its offices into one location.

The Red Hat Amphitheater turned out to be such a good idea that the latest chatter this Summer is all about making it bigger and better. We’ve talked about how the amphitheater was always meant to be temporary and now that the Raleigh Convention Center wants to expand, the amphitheater needs to move. For awhile, the plans to move the amphitheater were simple; put it one block to the south. However, with plans to close streets and the temptation to actually move it to Dix Park, this topic is getting more complicated.
If you’re not on the Community, you’re missing a great ongoing discussion so I encourage you to jump in on the conversation. If you’re staying here, let’s take a closer look at what we have on the table so far.

Tucked just off to the side, but not hidden away, is the newest apartment building to downtown Raleigh. Mira Raleigh brings around 280 homes to Kindley Street. Not familiar with Kindley Street? That’s because it’s basically a dead-end street off Salisbury Street. More plans for the area are in the works which could see this spot have even more development in the future.
