This view has always been an interesting one. As the sidewalk along the west side of Person Street opens up now just before Spring, we see two sides here. On one side, we have The Acorn, a soon-to-open apartment building, and on the other, we have an almost 100-year-old building with a new coffee shop in it, Little Native Coffee.

Construction is well underway at the site of the future Union Station Bus Facility. The groundbreaking actually took place back in October 2023 but what really matters is when the crane is put in place. That’s when it feels alive and active.

The 400H building is now complete. Maybe not technically but as far as I’m concerned as a downtown regular it is. The sidewalks are open and recently the Downtown Raleigh Alliance posted that residents are moving in. Now we wait for some ground-floor shops.
We’ve been following this development for quite some time now and I really like it for a variety of reasons but the main one being it’s mixed-use nature.

Demolition equipment is on site at the former Raleigh Police Department Headquarters building. The building at the corner of McDowell and Hargett Streets has been empty for years and is finally coming down. The future should see a new office tower for city employees, one that brings them together across multiple properties.

The apartments at Capital Square are getting dressed up with a pretty nice looking exterior facade. It’s not a typical pattern like you see in some of the recent developments in downtown Raleigh. The new tower has definitely topped out and the crews are working on the parking deck that will sit between the tower and next-door storage facility.

I love the space here as it truly feels like a space for all and you can see people from all different walks of life. The square organically caters to residents who want some open space, visitors who want to linger around the city, and events, planned or unplanned, in the various sections around this park-like square.

Straight out of the 2015 Downtown Plan, the southern end of Fayetteville Street, currently being used as surface parking and owned by the city, was to be kept for a major “catalytic” project. In 2015, it was envisioned that a major hotel to serve the convention center and a large corporate relocation would set up on the two sites. Fayetteville Street would then be extended down the middle.
