The hotels are coming! In the span of about three months, the upcoming Element by Westin hotel on Blount Street went from a single floor to almost topping out. In addition to other hotel openings and construction, this project sits nicely near the edge of downtown but has a great location. I imagine at this pace, we’ll see it open late next year.

If you swing by Blount Street these days, you can see the hotel construction taking shape in the middle of the block. This is starting to look like nice urban form here and I absolutely love the sharing of the parking with the development behind it. I formerly had it down as a TownePlace Suites-branded hotel but today I’m seeing it has changed to an Element by Westin, a first for the Triangle. I’ll have to confirm that but either way, the first floor is being put in place now.

Last time we checked in on The Acorn hotel, it was just a cleared site. Today, we can see the stairway (elevator?) shafts being constructed. I’ve noticed that these usually are the first to go up followed by the wood construction afterwards. I’ll have to check back soon as these will go to seven floors before that even starts.

There’s some site work taking place at 415 South Blount Street, the site of a once announced TownePlace Suites By Marriott hotel. Are they working on the hotel now? I’m not sure. Maybe they are building a fancy parking lot, which would make more money than the currently closed dirt lot, so I wouldn’t be surprised. Of course, I hope the hotel announcement is coming soon and perhaps we can see some updated renderings.

This view has always been an interesting one. As the sidewalk along the west side of Person Street opens up now just before Spring, we see two sides here. On one side, we have The Acorn, a soon-to-open apartment building, and on the other, we have an almost 100-year-old building with a new coffee shop in it, Little Native Coffee.

These apartments over on Person Street, called The Acorn, are getting some final touches. It really looks like we’ll see these new apartments open later this year. In addition, this is the first phase of the project and a new hotel should be built on the same property facing Blount Street. The hotel is planned to be a TownePlace Suites By Marriott branded hotel.

Here’s an east-facing photo of the future apartment building called The Acorn. The project will bring about 100 apartments facing Person Street and is planned to open in Summer 2023. Since construction began, we now know that a Marriott TownePlace Suites hotel will later be built on the site shown in the foreground. The hotel faces Blount Street and will share the parking deck you see on the lower floors in the photo.

The first concrete walls of the The Acorn apartments are standing up straight along Person Street. The apartment phase of the project is underway with plans for a hotel facing Blount Street to come later. I was walking down Cabarrus Street the other day and found this view to be lovely with the crane swinging back and forth and the skyline in the background.
