New Bar Opening at 112 Fayetteville Street
The Fayetteville Street Tavern has closed but now something new is brewing in the space at 112 Fayetteville Street. I had a chance to talk to one of the guys behind the new bar and he briefly showed me around the place. This will be a huge step up from the old Fayetteville Street Tavern and downtown beer monkeys should really enjoy this one.
Zack, one of the owners, showed me around and said there would be a focus on local beer and local art. The brick wall, shown in the picture above, will be a gallery showcasing local art. The beer selection is still up in the air but there are plans to offer products from the local breweries. The bar will also be drinking only and right now, the kitchen will be closed.
Also up in the air is the name. A website does exist but the guys have a long way to go until opening and things may change between now and then.
There are many more pictures of the construction progress up on Flickr as well.
BeerCon: The Busy Bee Cafe
The Busy Bee Cafe has returned to downtown Raleigh but with a different flair then its earlier setup in the same location back in the early 1900’s. Open early for the morning, coffee lovers and late for the night owls, the Busy Bee has an extensive menu for any time of the day.
A beer drinker’s spot for sure, the cafe serves up a great selection of brews picked by guys who know this stuff inside and out. Kegs are rotated frequently so lots of new beers are on tap for your drinking pleasure. Follow their blog or twitter for updates when new beers arrive.

The Best Baklava In Downtown
If that picture gets you excited then you have to try one of these three places in downtown. This comes up after a conversation with some friends and after trying them all, I can’t pick a winner cause they are all so good. Which is your favorite, on or off the list?
Sitti
The Empire Eats and Neomonde collaboration, Sitti has the same great Baklava as the deli on Hillsborough Street.
The Roast Grill
The best way to complete your day is with a homemade piece of Baklava after a couple burnt ones.
Turkish Delights
The traditional Baklava tastes great but with all those other flavors, it’ll have you coming back. (pictured above)
Pic of the Week
Spize Cafe is now open on Fayetteville Street. They are open for lunch, Mon-Fri and dinner, Wed-Sat.
Update: My mistake. Lunch is served Monday to Saturday.
Edelweiss Cafe Coming Soon
Work is slowly coming along at the Edelweiss Cafe in City Market. The new bakery at 317 Blake St. should be opening soon.

A Visit To Clyde Cooper’s Barbecue
It has been awhile since I’ve had any of Clyde Cooper’s delicious barbecue. Since I’m never in downtown during the workday, Saturday is my only time to visit so this past weekend I made a point to go. Cooper’s has been in business since 1938 and the restaurant on Davie St. is an old diner-style barbecue place. They have been in downtown Raleigh for a long time and it is tough to compare them to the newer, and more talked about, barbecue place, The Pit. It is a great restaurant and I enjoy visiting but in my opinion, Cooper’s has defined their style and really serves downtown Raleigh better with a neighborhood, friendly feel. You cannot beat their $3 barbecue sandwich and for the money, the trays and dinners are one of the best deals in downtown.
In the coming years, it will be interesting to follow what will really happen on this corner of Davie and Wilmington St. when the The Edison starts to come alive. The plan is to remove the older buildings on this block for a 39 story tower. Nothing is certain yet so only time will tell. Enjoy Clyde Cooper’s and the other businesses on this block.
