The 500 block of Fayetteville St. is getting a major renovation. City Plaza is now being constructed and should complete the street’s new makeover. With one corner untouched and left for access to Bank of America, the other three corners have been ripped up and stripped down. Work on the plaza is steady and if all goes according to plan, we could be dropping the acorn here come 2010.

This is just another piece in the puzzle that will complete the next phase of renewal for raleigh. Ten years from now the before and after will be display a huge changed for this city and solidify Raleigh’s place among capital cities and US cities in general.
City Plaza is yet another example of public abuse of taxpayer dollars. We went from having Goodmon finance most of the project to spening millions for one small area of Fayetteville Street.
Yet Raleigh is struggling to finance road improvements throughout the city.
Perhaps “Wake Community” has forgotten that for decades, Raleigh has poured millions into the sprawl of north Raleigh while neglecting downtown and letting it decay. Personally, the past several years has only been about playing “catch-up” and I’m fine with the investments going there.
Back onto the true topic of this blog entry, I will comment that I’m looking forward to seeing the end product, and having a full open Fayetteville Street. 2010? I was hoping this would be open before the end of summer!

RaleighRob, I must respectfully disagree with you. The City of Raleigh didn’t pour money to help growth in North Raleigh. This happened naturally, as more and more Triangle residents wanted to live in Raleigh and be closer to RTP. It would be unwise for our city to lose this huge tax base by neglecting North Raleigh. Our city has spent more money for downtown though, especially if you consider the population numbers of North Raleigh.
The problem with sprawl is that the city officials never had strong urban guidelines in place to make North Raleigh a more urban area. Even to this day we get crappy developments. What happened to all the promises for curbing sprawl and encouraging more responsible development.
As for the City Plaza, I welcome this effort and I am looking forward to seeing it completed – and finally see Fayetteville Street open all the way. This won’t happen until Sites 2 and 3 are developed, but I am sick and tired of seeing construction on Fayetteville Street taking place for several years now.
The bottom line is that Raleigh has not invested money in infrastructure for years and the place looks like it. Raleigh proper/downtown looks like a run-down mess and North Raleigh is a total disgrace.
