Most of you probably heard the news yesterday related to City Plaza. For those that did not, it was announced that Jimmy John’s has signed a lease for one of the spaces. From what I know, the Hillsborough St. and Page Rd. locations do pretty well. I think they will honestly kill it during lunch hours and pretty much own it on a nice weather day. If you haven’t been, Jimmy John’s serves pretty good sandwiches and makes them relatively fast so convenience is high. I believe the one near NC State stays open late too so we’ll see if this one does the same when it opens later this year.
Looking to the future of City Plaza, there are still other spaces to fill. The WRAL article claims that there are six total spaces available for restaurants. If all six become food places, then let’s hope there is a nice mix so that all meal hours are properly covered; from breakfast to late-night. It would be a shame for out of town visitors walking out of the nearby hotels to see an inactive “city center”.
Anyway, I’m actually really looking forward to City Plaza. Anyone’s first visit to Fayetteville St. can tell that there is some significance there and this plaza should make it feel like the center of all the activity on the street.

Who is the guy in the picture “Sub Quality Control?”
Good subs!
Good news, I guess… Hopefully more tenants will sign up, although the forecast doesn’t look good without significant residential numbers around Fayetteville Str. City Plaza is a great vision and I hope to see it pay off fast.
FYI – There’s also a JJ’s on Wake Forest Road that seems to do well. I agree that hopefully the plaza will end up with a mix of food. There’s definitely a need for more late-night options!
No idea who that guy is, probably Jimmy John fanboy #1.
You have to have foot traffic on the streets before kiosks become successful. I will bet you right now, within six months, all the pavillions will be closing at 6:00 (instead of stayiong open until 11:00 or midnight). Remember, if you have convention center guest, they will be expecting food around the clock. If the pavillions fail, it will be a direct result of the lack of quality 24/7 conferences at the center (where are all the conventions they said were booked for 2-3 years – have not heard a word – they should publish the schedule for the tax payers).
They DO publish the schedule

As you can see it’s booked pretty heavily through the end of 2009.

I like seeing anything that is popular or new move into downtown but personally, I think JJ subs stink. I rate them even lower than Scrubway.
@mike – Have you been to the convention center at all? There are conventions there almost every day, and not just the big public ones you see advertised on television.
I had never even heard of of JJs until I saw the news report and featured them handing out free subs. Pretty kewl promo and the line was pretty big.
