The buildings that lined the block of 500 Hillsborough Street have been removed and, shocker, most of the surface spaces are being used for parking now. That seems to be the next step in most cases (not all) before development takes place and after demolition. In reporting from the TBJ earlier this year, the plans for a residential development have been put on pause so we have to get used to this empty lot for awhile.
The site is zoned for heights up to 40-stories, Raleigh’s tallest zoning class. I guess I’m hoping that with those buildings out of the way and possibly scrapping the eight-story design, this sets up the future for something taller. Another 39-story building, like Highline Glenwood, would easily fit here but here’s hoping for movement on this site sooner rather than later.
