Pic of the Week

The City Hall tower on McDowell Street is looking fresh. I’m so glad that Hargett Street is open again both ways. Hargett is a key bike route and I use it multiple times a week. It’s all worth it though as the former empty police headquarters building that was at this site should now become an active building that also contributes to our skylilne.

The new building is such a step-up from the Raleigh Municipal Building (RMB) next door. 20th century Raleigh versus 21st century Raleigh in one photo.

I’ll have to admit it that I am proud of this building and the fact that the city went for an urban-style building, going vertical in a way that makes great use of the downtown space. That’s not what I’m seeing from the nearby state-owned buildings but I’ll save that analysis for another post. The city doesn’t seem done though as RMB will either be knocked down or something, I’m not sure actually at this time, as things could change. We’re also seeing the very beginnings of a refresh for Nash Square right across the street. The refresh would be an extension of the public spaces that the City Hall building will offer so that will be something worth watching.
