The intersection of Lenoir and McDowell Streets are typically quiet. I mean, you don’t see many pedestrians here and just car traffic rolling through on a typical day. However, on the night that Red Hat Amphitheater has a show, the atmosphere is quite different. The photo above shows the view across the intersection as the new Red Hat is still under construction. On show nights, I propose a pedestrian scramble at this intersection, allowing pedestrians to go to whichever corner they want and all the cars have to stop during that light interval.

It kind of hit me when walking around here recently. We’ll have to see how much space there is for pedestrians on that southwest corner but with that box office kiosk right there, it just doesn’t look like there’s as much space on the corner for a large group to gather. We’ll see when more is put together but I do think it would be cool to paint up the intersection, extending the energy from the amphitheater outward in an artistic way. Then, when hundreds of people leave the shows all at once, you just stop traffic and allow them all to dissipate into downtown. (or the parking deck right across the street)
