Pic of the Week

Photo of the construction site of the NC Education Campus

Above is a shot across Jones Street of the future North Carolina Education Campus as you exit the Nature Research Center. Three cranes have been actively moving materials throughout the year to piece together the State of North Carolina’s latest office building. The block-sized project still remains without any form of rendering or details, to the best of my knowledge anyway, and the Community is watching this one like a hawk.

The only hints we’ve seen are the site plan below and so far, what’s being put together seems to match up. It looks like a ton of underground parking is being built right now but once that’s covered over, we’ll get this T-shaped building with outdoor plazas.

A lot of this is illegible and doesn’t mention height. You can see the parking entrances/exits along Lane Street as well as one on Salisbury Street. My fear is this thing will be the epitome of the monolithic blocks that continue to plague the state government district. From what you can see, it’s just not a very efficient use of land.

It makes you appreciate what we get at the local level, especially as the City of Raleigh is building a new City Hall at the same time. We’ll just continue to wait and see.
