Raleigh Wide Open III on Sept. 5-6

RWO III has been announced and it all revolves around the opening of the new Raleigh Convention Center. Clear your calendars for a two-day party on September 5th and 6th. This new info comes from a news conference held this morning which the N&O has covered.

RALEIGH – A two-day downtown celebration Sept. 5 and 6 will mark the opening of Raleigh’s new convention center, officials said today.

At a news conference this morning, Mayor Charles Meeker and Wake commissioners’ chairman Joe Bryan announced plans for a street festival to be called “Raleigh Wide Open III” and an indoor “showcase extravaganza.” They expect 100,000 people to attend.

The events start with a ribbon-cutting at noon Friday, Sept. 5. The celebration will run from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. that day and from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6.

  1. so how does this handle your previous post about the square in front not being open? is there gonna be a construction site right in the middle of the focus of RWOIII? We manage to bungle the most obvious things. Raleigh City Council.

  2. Well, the square I was referring to was City Plaza. This is close to the Convention Center but not next to it. The CC and the new Marriot face each other on Salisbury street. I bet they will close this street for people to walk around.

In the past, Raleigh Wide Open has closed off Fayetteville St. so I’m going to guess that Fayetteville St. and parts of Salisbury street will be closed so that people can check out the new CC. They probably will use Davie St. as a connection from Fayetteville St. to Salisbury. So the plaza will not get in the way, however, at the end of Fayetteville, will be a construction site.

  3. Request to all: Fayetteville Street is an awful name (always has been), from here out, it will be referred to as “F” Street.

  4. I hope they don’t book Eddie Money or any other aging decripit has-been-but I am sure they will to try to attract the fat Bud-guzzling hicks from every burg around Raleigh that never go downtown.

  5. I hope they convince Journey to perform … that would be awesome (and, for the record, I’m not being sarcastic). I’ve never heard of RWO before, but the acronym makes me think of the WWF for some reason. Now that would be crazy … if they got Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant to wrestle downtown (wait, didn’t Andre the Giant die)? In the absence of Journey and Hulk Hogan, I’d settle for a buffalo wing eating contest! All fun forms of entertainment. I mean, anything is better than dropping an acorn, right?

  6. Forget about Journey and chicken wings. How about motorcycles and barbeque? Maybe our low expectations will result in the inevitable-a boring strip of street.
