City Plaza Will Not Be Ready For Convention Center Opening

I sent off a couple e-mails about the current state of the City Plaza project. I thought it was a no-brainer that getting this plaza done at the same time as the opening of the Raleigh Convention Center and Marriot Hotel was important. The response I got was not so pleasant.

Thanks for your inquiry. In the City Plaza, we are completing the negotiation of the easement with the owners of the Bank of America building – this should get us ready for a full funding, design approval and authorization to proceed at the last Council meeting in March or the first of April, Which completes construction in May of 2009. The convention center and hotel will be open September of this year. It looks like we’ll have a nice construction site in the middle of Fayetteville St. for eight months after this. Before you start getting all upset like I did, you may need to think consider some other factors.

The perfect scenario would have been for the plaza to be ready for all the new visitors, and current residents, to see and enjoy. It can be argued that first impressions are important and getting this thing done on time should have been something to fight for. But honestly, this is only eight months and we have booked some conventions through 2020. Fayetteville St. is not the only district downtown. There are plenty of other areas that will be ready to serve visitors in the mean time. It is also important to note that this is out of the city’s hands as the owners of One Hannover (BoA building) are the major player in this little project.

It is unfortunate that we have to wait even longer to do a drive or walk from one end of Fayetteville St. to the other. I would have preferred it to be ready for the September opening, but if eight more months is needed then I’ll deal with it.

  1. I’m a tad confused. I already knew that the plaza itself would not be finished by the time the CC opens. But I thought Fayetteville Street itself, extended from Davie to Lenoir, would be. Are you saying that’s not the case?

  2. I do not have any evidence to say that the street will not be open, I only based my post assuming that construction on this block would impede traffic. Visitors could still get to the front door of the Marriott using Lenoir St., after its two-way conversion, so driving through is not entirely necessary.

    We would need to know more details on the construction strategy. Will they build the street first then the plaza while traffic operates normally? Or will the entire block be shut down and the Plaza opened all at once?

  3. Should we be surprised by this? NO! I bet this so- called “Plaza”, will be nothing more than an empty open space (no character, no flat screens, no fountains, no art, etc. and they will be based on budget issues, they already cut back from $21M to $16M). Knowing Raleigh, just like “F Street” it will be nothing more than a bland “GRAY Pavement” area.

  4. I think that a lot will depend on how far the city actually can go, in terms of spending. This project is more complex than most people think, mainly because of the underground facilities. As time goes by, it will get more and more expensive. Hopefully, a cooperation between public and private entities will “save” this vision and we’ll see this project in its entirety.

    BTW, I am not sure the city leaders ever committed to having the Fayetteville Street reopening project completed by this summer. Wishful thinking on their side, and assumptions on ours, but other than that there wasn’t a date set in stone for Phase II. I would like to see the city putting out some RFPs for Sites 2 and 3, though, before the opening of the new convention center. It would be nice to see what else we can expect.
