Public Comments Sought On Downtown Parking And Transportation Issues

The City of Raleigh will hold a public forum on Tuesday, July 29, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. regarding downtown parking and transportation issues. The meeting will be administered by the Downtown Parking Task Force in the city council chamber on the second floor of the Avery C. Upchurch Government Complex, 222 W. Hargett St.

For the past several months a consulting team has been working with City staff and the Downtown Parking Task Force – whose members are appointed by the mayor — to examine parking and transportation issues in downtown Raleigh. The purpose of the study is to develop a plan for improving downtown access, including access to parking. At the public forum, the consulting team will present an overview of the study findings and provide an opportunity for input from the community before completing the report. This is a chance for citizens to see key findings of the field investigations and hear principals and strategies related to downtown parking and access that may affect future planning and policy decisions. Whether you live, work, shop, do business, or simply visit downtown to have fun, citizens are being asked to provide feedback.

Downtown Appetite for Art On July 26th

The Glenwood-Brooklyn Neighborhood Association is sponsoring this event and it benefits the local Boys & Girls Clubs of Wake County. Here is a relevant N&O article.

RALEIGH, N.C. – On Saturday, July 26, 2008, the Historic Glenwood-Brooklyn Neighborhood Association (HGBNA) will host its fourth annual “Downtown Appetite for Art.” Raleigh’s most popular summer charity event will once again showcase local artists and businesses that have joined together with their downtown neighbors to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of Wake County.

The public is invited to “Downtown Appetite for Art,” which will be held at Marbles Museum. Organizers hope to once again raise enough money to fund the Boys & Girls Clubs’ art programs. Highlights of this year’s event:

• Live art auction featuring local and national artists
• Silent auction of fabulous art, trips, tickets to sporting events and sports memorabilia, spa packages, gift certificates, and much more
• Food and wine from favorite Raleigh restaurants – The George, Sullivan’s Steakhouse, Firebirds Wood Fired Grill, Mura, and the soon-to-be launched Solas
• A reunion and rare performance by the band Arrogance

Tickets are $50. Visit www.da4a.net to purchase. Tickets purchased at the door will be $100.
Last year, “Downtown Appetite for Art” drew more than 550 participants and raised nearly $65,000.
For the third year in a row, the event raised funds to provide financial support for the entire Boys & Girls Clubs’ visual and performing arts program, serving more than 4,000 area youth from its seven locations.

For more information about attending the event or becoming a sponsor, please contact Roy Attride at roy@da4a.net, or 919.389.6726.

The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. Open every day after school and on Saturdays when kids need positive, productive outlets, the Boys & Girls Clubs fill the void with structured, enriching and exciting after-school programs.

Since 1967, volunteers have made it possible for the Boys & Girls Clubs to serve over 4,032 youth 6 to 18 years of age in seven locations across Wake County. The Boys & Girls Clubs is a 501(c)3 organization and depends on individual and corporate investments and volunteers to accomplish its mission. www.wakebgc.org

Thanks, Scott.

RTP Startup Weekend In Downtown Raleigh

July 11-13th is the weekend for RTP Startup and its goal is to create a company or two (or three) in this short range of time. The idea is to throw together people with different talents and see what happens. Here’s a good explanation from the official website:

Startup Weekend recruits a highly motivated group of developers, business managers, startup enthusiasts, marketing gurus, graphic artists and more to a 54 hour event that builds communities, companies and projects.

Founded in 2007 by Andrew Hyde, the weekend is a concept of a conference focusing on learning by creating. It is known for its quick decisions, ‘out of the box’ thinking, unique facilitation technique and letting the founders show what they can do. The program has already met with success in Boulder, Toronto, New York, Hamburg, Houston, West Lafayette, Boston, DC and more.

Edge Office in Glenwood South will play host to the event. The office furniture retailer is a perfect setting for anyone with big ideas to brainstorm with others that want to create and invent. A $40 fee gets you in for the all weekend event.

I’m new to the idea but really intrigued as to what we may create with a bunch of people in a room with different skills. If you are at all interested, the RTP Startup website has all the details. This is a great opportunity to network with people, start thinking outside the box, and just socialize with motivated people. If you are going, I’ll see you there.

Carolina Rollergirls Action

Even though the event is outside of downtown, they are in all the parades so The Carolina Rollergirls are worth mentioning here. All kidding aside, I went to the 2008 Golden Skate Championship Bout this past Saturday and had so much fun at the event. If you are looking for something a little different, mark your calendar and do not miss the next bout this year.

The rest of the 2008 season:
Saturday, Sep 13
Saturday Nov 22
Sunday Dec 7

Watch the video from the bout on Saturday.
