New Bern Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Construction Has Officially Begun

It’s been over two years since the ground breaking ceremony but the New Bern Avenue Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project has finally started. Yes, New Bern Avenue has cones all over it and crews are starting some infrastructure work. Package 1 is underway with the subsequent packages planned for later this year. Below, you should watch the latest update given to the Raleigh Transit Authority in February 2026 which gives a nice overview of BRT in general.

Package 2 contains more work for the corridor and it’s in the near-final phases where the city has to execute the contract, anticipated to start this Summer. Package 3 follows that and that should wrap up this project. Then we can follow along as it’s built out over the next few years.

The video also gets into updates for the rest of the BRT network. The Western and Southern routes feel like it could fall victim to federal funding, which is a more complicated topic than I am licensed to cover, so we’ll see how it goes. The Northern Corridor plans are the least baked and studies around that are ongoing.

In the mean time, New Bern Avenue is going to look quite different in the coming years for sure. Make sure to follow the construction updates on the city’s website here:
