I’m sure someone is working on a name to kind of “districtify” the area of South Saunders street and Lake Wheeler Road where Rockway Raleigh and The Weld are currently being built but for now, I’ll just refer to everything around here as Saunders Street. Until that’s more socially adopted, we should see the opening of new digs and new eats here in 2025.
The first development in Rockway Raleigh is The Row apartments. As you can see in the photo above, it’s looking fresh. With sidewalks—some impressively wide—you really get the sense that this is a place meant for lingering. And linger we will, because Benchwarmers Bagels is setting up shop here. Pair that with the already-open Willow House Coffee across the street, and maybe we should just go ahead and call this the Breakfast District.
Bagels and coffee after a nice, morning ride on the greenway. That’s got to be the Raleigh way, no?
Nearby, you simply can’t miss the two towers at The Weld. Slated to open in Summer 2025, these two residential towers will put Raleighites on the doorstep of Dix Park and a 20 minute walk to the Warehouse District or Fayetteville Street. Combined with The Row, we’re getting about 1,000 homes into this area this year. Maybe Park District is a more appropriate name?
I love, and so does the crew over on the Community, the drone shots of the construction being put up on YouTube. Here’s the latest for your enjoyment and awe or watch it directly here.
What’s crazy to think about is that both The Row and The Weld are phase 1 from their respective developers. The area could possibly double the amount of homes in the near future. Phase 2 hasn’t started yet and there’s still the Lake Wheeler Road Improvement Project that will kick off this year to look forward to.
