BeerCon: The Raleigh Times

The Raleigh Times is more then just a watering hole but a downtown Raleigh museum. At the site of the old newspaper, this restaurant displays Raleigh’s past with newspaper printings and photos scattered throughout the dining room and bar area. Even the torn up walls are on display, some covered transparently and not hidden from us. Bounce over to the website for more paper and building history.

The Raleigh Times is a popular location for those that prefer outdoor seating and a varied selection of beers. On top of that, there is a very comfortable long bar, dining room, and smoking bar inside (dubbed Smoking Times). Taps are always changing and I encourage you to try something different each time you visit.

  1. Nice place, but their lunch menu is overpriced for the amount of food you get on your plate (which are small portions). My experience, great place for drinks, but not for eating.

  2. I looked at their menu online last night and it looks like they have made some changes. They now have sandwhices, plates, salads/vegetarians, and starters (the plates are the main change). They took the pimento cheese off, but let’s hope this is temporary.
The Belgain beers are now separated into sections based on the style which will be helpful when trying to make a decision on beers that you don’t see around a lot.
It also looks like the prices aren’t quite as reasonable as they seemed to be when they first opened, but times are changing I suppose.

  3. I’d have to disagree with Tony about the food. It may be that I am not eating there for lunch, but for evening beer and food it’s spot on. The prices are more than reasonable in my opinion. There are not many choices in downtown Raleigh for getting a quality bite to eat at a reasonable price. I personally love the salad’s. Always fresh and delicious!

I’m sad that the Ommegang is gone for the summer. Someday, delicious beer, I’ll have you again. I’ve also heard it rumored that the PBR on tap will be replaced by High Life. I have to say this is lame. The “Champagne” is no match for PBR.

  6. That delicious Ommegang Witte spoken of here is available for a limited time on draft at the Red Room on Glenwood. The St. Bernardus Witte is also delicious at RT but quite a bit different.

  7. The Raleigh Times is not only a nice urban bar, but also a landmark for our downtown’s not-so-extended historic fabric. A great renovation and in my book a success story!!! Kudos to Greg Hatem for his effort on preserving this valuable piece of Raleigh’s past.

The few times I’ve been there I was happy with the food and service, although I haven’t eaten there enough to have a favorite :)
